The Malta Crafts Foundation is seeking expressions of interest from talented, passionate, and experienced artisans to fill the position of Tutor for the MQF Level 2 Award in Sign Writing (Tberfil).
Traditional Sign Writing forms an important part of Malta’s visual and cultural heritage. This role aims to support the preservation of traditional hand-painted lettering techniques commonly found on shop signs, commercial vehicles, and decorative displays. The selected candidate will play an important role in passing these valuable skills on to a new generation of learners.
The successful applicant will be engaged to deliver the MQF Level 2 Award in Sign Writing, scheduled to commence in mid-September 2026 and conclude in February 2027.
Course Details
The course introduces learners to the fundamentals of traditional Sign Writing, including layout design, letter formation, brush techniques, colour application, and finishing methods. Learners will explore the art and craft of creating hand-painted signs using traditional materials and techniques that emphasise precision, aesthetics, and functionality.
The Award consists of 200 learning hours, including 40 contact hours. Through practical exercises and project work, learners will develop the skills required to design and produce high-quality Sign Writing projects while gaining an appreciation of this important aspect of Maltese visual heritage.

Duration: 20 weeks (one lesson per week)

Schedule: Mondays or Tuesdays, 18:00h to 20:00h
Rate: €20 per hour
Minimum Age of Learners: 16
Course Assessment
Assessment will be continuous throughout the programme to ensure that learners achieve the intended learning outcomes. Learners will compile a portfolio showcasing the work completed during the course and will undertake a final project demonstrating the knowledge and practical skills acquired.
Assessment will be based on the following components:
- Class Participation and Attendance (50%) – Learners will be assessed on their engagement, participation, practical application of techniques, and overall progress throughout the course.
- Home-Based Project Assignment (50%) – Learners will be required to design and produce a project that demonstrates the techniques, knowledge, and competencies acquired during the programme.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must possess:
- A minimum MQF Level 4 qualification in Sign Writing, Art, Design, or a closely related field; OR
- Demonstrable professional competence acquired through substantial industry experience.
Applicants relying on professional experience in lieu of formal qualifications must provide evidence of at least five (5) years of relevant practical experience in Sign Writing or a closely related discipline. Applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis to determine equivalency.
Eligible applicants may include practising artisans, retired artisans, and former trade school teachers with demonstrable expertise in traditional Maltese Sign Writing techniques.
To ensure a transparent and fair recruitment process, an interviewing board will be established to evaluate all eligible candidates.
