The Malta Crafts Foundation participated during the Geographical Indications Conference 2025 held in Alicante, Spain, organised among others by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the European Commission’s DG Grow and DG AGRI, and which attracted around 500 participants onsite and more than another 1,000 online.
With the regulations on geographical indications (GIs) about to enter into effect around the European Union, the conference was an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas, learn more about the new procedures, and discuss future challenges and opportunities resulting from their introduction.
The conference was particularly relevant for the Malta Crafts Foundation in view of GIs importance for crafts as a means to help access new markets, safeguard cultural heritage, protect against counterfeiting, stimulate tourism and economic growth, and contribute to the increase in number of artisans.
